Have you been told we need to suffer like Jesus?
Jesus suffered only on the cross. He multiplied bread, calmed storms, cast out demons and was always in control. This verse cannot be saying that we are to also get nailed on the cross suffer. So what is it saying ?
Phil 3:10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death ...
Participation here in Greek is koinōnia. It means communion or fellowship. It is not saying we are to suffer like Jesus but to fellowship in His sufferings. How do we fellowship
1 Cor 10:16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
Here communion in Greek is koinōnia again. The model given are the Jewish people having communion or fellowship with the altar of burnt offerings when they eat of the sacrifices. In other words they obtain benefit of their sacrifices on the altar when they partake of sacrifices.
1 Cor 10:18 Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers (koinonia) of the altar?
Jesus suffered for us so that we can receive the benefits of His work.
