Abraham’s faith is attainable by Grace

Abraham is called the father of faith.  In these two accounts below we see his faith described in mighty fashion.  Is this standard of faith so amazingly high that ordinary people simply can’t attain to it?  The good news is that we don’t need perfect or mighty faith at all.

When we look at the actual account in Genesis chapter 17 of Abraham we find that he laughed at God.  Yet there is no record of this in Romans or Hebrews.  Why?  It is because when Abraham believed that God would give him a son in Genesis chapter 15 (not because he deserved it but because of God’s goodness i.e. grace of God) he was declared righteous.  This grace of God is bigger than Abraham’s faults and imperfections – even his lapses in faith.  We don’t need great faith, small faith like a mustard seed will do.

Romans 4:18-20
Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.  And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb:  He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

Hebrews 11:11
By faith Abraham, even though he was past age–and Sarah herself was barren–was enabled to become a father because he considered him faithful who had made the promise.

Genesis 17:15 Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.  And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her.”  Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” And Abraham said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”
