How to become child-like in order to enter the kingdom of heaven

4/2015

Matt 18:3 And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

This is so important that it is also recorded in Luke 18:17  Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” as well as in Mark 10:15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

You might think okay, I can do that and be a little child.  But honestly have you been able to be enough of a little child to qualify for the kingdom of heaven?  What if you tried your best but it wasn’t good enough?

Little children in the Greek is paidon – παιδίον.  Was there anyone in the Bible who was able to change himself or herself totally into a little child?  The answer is that there was no one because Jesus never referred to any of His disciples as paidon.  In fact the word paidon never appears in the Bible referencing an adult.  That is except the one time after Jesus’ death and resurrection.  It was when He met them by the Sea of Galilee.  There Jesus calls them paidon for the first time.

John 21:5 Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?” They answered Him, “No.”

No one by their own effort and sincerity can be truly child-like.   It is an unattainable standard.  However by the grace of God through the finished work of Jesus man can become paidon and receive the kingdom of God.  Grace is not grace if it is of works.
